Pyrite, or iron pyrite, is a metallic mineral made up of iron and sulfur. It is a mineral that is commonly found and it occurs in a number of forms.
Pyrite lands somewhere between 6 and 6.5 on the Moh’s hardness scale. That means that, while it is easily scratched, it takes at least something as hard as a steel nail to do it.
You may know Pyrite as Fool’s Gold. While it may not offer the monetary returns of gold at the bank, Pyrite is just as valuable in your crystal toolkit. From that financial perspective, carrying a piece in your pocket or purse invites luck and money.
Pyrite also corresponds to the 3rd, or Solar Plexus Chakra. The Solar Plexus Chakra, located in the area of the physical solar plexus which is part of our sympathetic nervous system, is where we connect with our will, self-confidence, and drive. The physical, and chakral, Solar Plexus influence our stomach, kidneys, liver, and adrenal glands.
The word Pyrite is said to come from the Greek word for fire. When two pieces of Pyrite are struck together it creates sparks. Fire is the element connected to, you probably guessed it, our Solar plexus Chakra. I imagine that you have heard the phrase “Fire in the belly”. Pyrite stimulates this fire, enhancing vitality and encouraging action taking.
This can be used for personal energy balancing work or can be incorporated into the environment to support activity, or the flow of energy, in certain areas of your home or office space.
Pyrite has along history as a supportive stone. Some sources say that polished pieces of Pyrite were used as mirrors, and maybe even as magic mirrors for a form of divination called scrying.
Because it stimulates vitality, Pyrite can be found in medicine bundles carried by Shaman.
Scott Cunningham in Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Crystal Gem and Metal Magic shares a way to use 5 pieces of Pyrite and 5 candles to attract money.
And in The Book of Stones, Robert Simmons says that holding a piece of Pyrite in each hand offers instant rebalancing. He says ” When you can’t take a nap, hold a Pyrite.”
Pyrite is also part of The Stone Vision Oracle, offering us the message of sparks. When Pyrite appears trust that things are going to happen!
